Lottery Scams

Lottery & Sweepstakes Scams

Lottery and sweepstakes scams typically involve scammers reaching out to older adults via phone, mail, or social media, claiming they've won a large prize, such as cash or a car. Here are the warning signs of these scams and what to do if if you or a loved one has been targeted.

What to Look For

Sweepstakes and lottery scams are often impersonations of well-known sweepstakes contests, such as the Publishers Clearing House, or claim to be a lottery official. Key red flags to look out for include being asked to pay taxes or fees upfront, requests for financial information, and being told to keep the winnings a secret from your friends and family. Scammers frequently ask victims to wire money or send gift cards, Bitcoin, or money orders to cover supposed "processing fees" or "taxes." These payment methods are nearly impossible to trace or recover. Encouraging secrecy helps the scammer prevent the victim from seeking advice or intervention from others.

How to Protect Yourself

If you did not enter a lottery or sweepstakes, it's highly unlikely that you've won one. Scammers often claim that you were “automatically” entered into the sweepstakes, but legitimate lotteries and sweepstakes don't know who holds the winning ticket until it’s claimed. Additionally, real contests do not require any upfront payment for taxes or fees. If you receive such a call or message, your best response is to hang up, tear up the letter, or delete the email. Scammers rely on creating a sense of urgency, hoping you’ll make a hasty decision. Always take a moment to think and consult with family or friends before taking any action.

How to Respond

If you have been a victim of a lottery or sweepstakes scam, or you have information about the scammer, report it to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3.gov), your state attorney general, or your local police department. Publisher’s Clearing House can be contacted at 877-908-3360, if you feel you’ve been specifically targeted by this scam. Additionally, contact your financial institution to verify if any personal or account information has been compromised. They can also give you resources on how to protect yourself.
